| LCSC men’s basketball team announces signing of four recruits |

The Lewis-Clark State College men’s basketball program has wrapped up its recruiting for the 2010-11 season with the signing of four more players, Warrior coach Tim Walker announced recently.
The Warriors signed Donte Roberts, a 6-foot-10 junior center, and Devon Adams, a 6-4 small forward, both from Shelton State Community College in Alabama, along with Donnie Lao, a 6-2 senior guard from Alaska-Anchorage, and Darin Stewart, a 6-3 junior guard/forward from Citrus College in California.
Roberts played in 22 games for Shelton State last season and averaged 6.6 rebounds, which was second on the team, along with 4.6 points and 1.2 blocks per game. He shot 54.4 percent from the field and helped the team to a 28-4 record, including a 12-2 mark in conference play. He was named his team’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Roberts, who is from Birmingham, Ala., was a three-sport standout in high school, playing first base in baseball and tight end in football, as well as center in basketball. He originally signed with Alabama A&M out of high school before transferring to Shelton State.
“We’re excited that Donte chose LC State,” Walker said. “He will be a big presence inside for us and our defense. Donte could really help with shot blocking and scoring around the rim. I think you’ll be surprised at how well he runs and moves. He’s quick for a guy his size and he plays really hard.”
Adams, who is from Irvine, Calif., attended Jserra High School where he earned four varsity letters and was captain of the team his final three seasons.
In 25 games with Shelton State last season, Adams started 14 and averaged 5.3 rebounds, which was third on the team, and 3.8 points per game. He shot 55.7 percent from the field.
“Devon is a skilled guy that could really have an impact for us on both ends of the floor,” Walker said. “He’s athletic, shoots the ball well, and can defend. Devon can also put the ball on the floor, which will help us in our motion. I think our system is a good fit for him. Both Devon and Donte played in a very good program at Shelton State, and were well coached by Barry Mohun.”
Lao, who is from Midvale, Utah, graduated from Hillcrest High School in 2007 after earning three letters in basketball and two each in football and track. In basketball, he helped his team win two straight regional title and was the region MVP as a senior.
Lao then attended Snow College in Utah for two seasons and served as the captain his sophomore season when he earned second-team all-conference honors. Last season with the Seawolves, he was the team’s fourth-leading scorer at 7.7 points per game and finished eighth on the school’s single-season free-throw percentage list at 87.2 percent.
“Donnie has some great qualities that will help u,” Walker said. “He’s a leader, he knows how to win, he shoots the ball really well from the 3-point line, and he just knows how to play. We’re excited that Donnie chose LC State. We expect some good things from him.”
Steward was captain of the La Lumiere Prep School basketball and track teams in 2007. During his senior year in basketball, he was the All-Area Team co-MVP and his school’s Male Athlete of the Year. He averaged 21.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.
In college, Stewart earned all-conference honors as a sophomore and helped his team to a 29-3 record. He averaged 7.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists and 18 minutes of playing time per game.
“Darin will be a very good player for us,” Walker said. “He shoots it well, can put the ball on the deck, defend, and just has a good feel for the game. Darin played for a great coach in Rick Croy at Citrus College. We’re excited about Darin and what he could bring to our team. We expect him to be a leader also.”
The Warriors play exhibition games at the University of Montana, Washington State, and the University of Idaho on consecutive days Nov. 4-6 this season and then play their season opener on Nov. 9 at Portland Bible College. LCSC, which has only six non-Frontier Conference home games this season, will play its home opener on Nov. 12 against Southern Oregon University at 7:30 p.m.
