| Five LCSC baseball players earn region honors |

05-07-09 VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Five members of the Lewis-Clark State College baseball team earned Region I honors, including four on the All-Region I team and one on the Gold Glove squad.
Coaches from the eight schools in the region voted for the teams.
Senior outfielder Sean Halton joined junior infielders Ben Ornelas and Josh Ashenbrenner, and pitcher Tom Peale on the all-Region I squad, while senior catcher Brian Ward was named to the Gold Glove squad.
Ashenbrenner, who has played second base, shortstop and third base for LCSC this season, was selected as the extra infielder on the All-Star squad. He leads LCSC in hitting with a .437 averages with nine doubles, four home runs and 43 RBI. Ashenbrenner is in his second year of the program after transferring from Washington State University and is from Kirkland, Wash.
Ornelas, who is from Lompoc, Calif., made an immediate impact after becoming eligible a month into the season. He is hitting .407 in 31 games and is second on the team in home runs with seven and is third in RBI with 42. He also has eight doubles and is tied for the team lead in triples with two.
Halton, who converted from first base to the outfield this season, is hitting .367 with team highs of 14 doubles, 14 home runs and 58 RBI. The native of Fresno, Calif., has appeared in 47 of the Warriors’ 49 games this season which also is a team high as is his .728 slugging percentage.
Peale, who is from Long Beach, transferred to LCSC from the University of San Francisco and has been a key performer for the Warriors. He has started all 11 games he has appeared in and is tied for the team lead in innings pitched at 58. He has a 3.72 earned run average along with a 5-1 record. He’s allowed 20 walks, but had struck out 50, and opponents are hitting just .254 against him.
Ward, who is from Huntington Beach, Calif., has had another outstanding year behind the plate. Opponents have only been successful on 19 of 45 stolen-base attempts against the Warriors this season and he’s made 190 put outs along with 25 assists. He has a fielding percentage of .991.
LCSC, the University of British Columbia, and Cal State-San Marcos each had four players selected to the All-Star squad, while Oregon Tech had three, and Concordia and College of Idaho had one each.
Oregon Tech second baseman Ryson Mauricio was named the Region’s Player of the Year and is now up for the NAIA national Player of the Year. This ends a streak of two straight NAIA national Player of the Year awards from LCSC. Beau Mills was the Player of the Year in 2007, while Kyle Greene won the honor last year. Mauricio hit .378 with 14 home runs and 69 RBI for the Owls.
