Backpacks For Kids
Sponsored by The Idaho Foodbank, Lewiston

"Backpacks for Kids" is sponsored by the Idaho Foodbank Lewiston Facility and supplied more than 240 backpacks with nutritious food for the weekend to selected children each Friday at the elementary schools in Asotin, Clarkston, Lewiston, Lapwai, Weippe, Pierce, Orofino, Grangeville and Opportunities Unlimited in Lewiston during the 2007-2008 school year. Recipient children were identified by their school counselors and/or teachers. In conjunction with the school and volunteer groups, donated backpacks were filled and sent home with the children on Fridays and returned on Mondays and again sent home with the same child on Friday.

This program directly provides food to children in need. Funding for this program is through donations and grants (such as the Twin County United Way Safety Net Grant program and a grant from Regence Blue Shield). This is a unique opportunity for you to have a direct impact on children in our community. In partnership with the local schools and the Idaho Foodbank, you can make a difference in the lives of these special children.

Each backpack costs about $5.98 to fill with nutritious food each week. For the 2008-2009 school year we are in hope of providing up to 300 backpacks per week at a total cost of $64,584 ($1794 per week).

In order to support the more rural areas that have limited financial resources, we anticipate that outside grant money will help fund them and we hope that we can generate the funds necessary to support the LC Valley locally with TCUW grants and YOUR HELP!!

If you or your business would like additional information on how to help fill these backbacks with foor for these very special children, please contact Chuck Whitman at the Idaho Foodbank, 208-746-2288.
