LEWISTON- - Nearly everyone enjoys the Idaho outdoors. Now there is an opportunity to get directly involved in helping the state's wildlife through hands-on, volunteer activities with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.
“Volunteers can help with everything we do,” said Jennifer Bruns, volunteer coordinator based in Lewiston. “Not only is volunteering fun, but it can be educational and very rewarding.”
Interested persons are invited to attend an informational meeting on the volunteer program Monday, March 12, 6 p.m., at the Idaho Fish and Game regional office, 3316 16th Street in Lewiston. Fish and Game personnel will present information about upcoming volunteer projects, the need for additional volunteer hunter and bowhunter education instructors, plus opportunities to help with the tradition of hunting and fishing by helping mentor youth.
Upcoming volunteer projects include habitat plantings, forestry improvements, angler interviews, steelhead tagging, and helping teach youth hunting and fishing skills. The department also needs volunteers skilled in carpentry, welding, computer data entry and clerical tasks.
During 2006, over 3,142 volunteers donated 70,859 hours of labor. Total monetary value of their labor and donations of equipment, materials and supplies was over $1,520,504.
