Beautification Project Includes Historical Artwork

April 22, 2003 The City of Lewiston dedicated a $700,000 entry beautification project. Consisting of 200 trees, over 2000 plants and shrubs and 20 life size sculptures on both ends of the Memorial Bridge on U.S. Highway 12 across the Clearwater River. The beautification project was funded with a matching grant from the Idaho Department of Transportation.

These pieces local artist Shirley Bothum depict Explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark with Sacajawea , Corps of Discovery Guide, on their Journey west.

Five groups of sculptures are situated on the south side of the Clearwater River at the Hwy 95/ US 12 interchange. Artists Keith Powell and David Govedare have called their work Two Nations meeting on the Kooskooskie River, which was the explorer’s name for the Clearwater River. A total of 18 sculptures tell the story of Lewis and Clark’s return from the Pacific Ocean to meet the Nez Perce Indians who had given them food and traded with them a year before. The sculptures are welded from Core-10 steel, which, unlike other steel, protects itself from weather with a layer of rust. The grant commissioned 17 pieces. Artists Powell and Govedare donated an additional piece, Flint Necklace, which still appears shiny in the slide show. Flint Necklace is the Great Grand Father of Chief Looking Glass who rose to fame two generations later.
